BJP Prepares for Jammu and Kashmir Elections Amid Protests and Resignations
Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], August 31: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is actively preparing for the upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Tarun Chugh, BJP National General Secretary and in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir, stated that the first phase of election preparations has been thoroughly reviewed. He emphasized that the BJP is contesting the elections with full strength and without any alliances.
Chugh criticized those who previously supported Pakistan and are now seeking votes in the name of unity and integrity. Meanwhile, Ramban SSP Kulbir Singh assured that security arrangements are being tightened to prevent any untoward incidents during the polls.
Resignation and Protests
On the same day, BJP District President from Samba, Kashmira Singh, resigned, expressing disappointment over not being considered for a ticket in the upcoming elections. Singh, who has been with the BJP for over 40 years, criticized the party for favoring outsiders over loyal local workers.
Additionally, BJP workers and locals from the Chhamb constituency protested against the party’s candidate list, demanding local representatives. They carried placards and threatened to boycott the elections if their demands were not met. The BJP has announced Rajeev Sharma as its candidate from the Chhamb Assembly Segment.
Election Details
The elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes on October 8. There are 90 assembly constituencies, with 7 seats reserved for SCs and 9 for STs. Jammu and Kashmir has 88.06 lakh eligible voters.
In the last assembly elections, the PDP won 28 seats, the BJP 25, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference 15, and the Congress 12. The PDP and BJP formed a coalition government, but the BJP withdrew its support in 2018. These are the first elections in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.
