New Delhi [India], August 22: BJP MP Saumitra Khan has called for the resignation of Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee amid the ongoing Supreme Court hearing on the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Reiterating the demands, Khan stated, “Everyone demands that the rapist and murderers be arrested at the earliest.” He also called for the arrest of the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the team that informed the victim’s family of a suicide. “The Kolkata Police Commissioner should be arrested first and taken into CBI custody. The team which informed the victim’s parents of suicide should be arrested,” added Khan.

Khan expressed concern that the Kolkata Police is trying to cover up the case and asked for the resignation of the West Bengal Chief Minister. “The way Kolkata Police is trying to cover up the case, we are scared whether this case will go forward. Being a woman, Mamata Banerjee should take responsibility and resign,” said Khan.

Earlier, BJP leader CR Kesavan had also claimed that Mamata Banerjee had lost the confidence of the people of West Bengal and called for her resignation. “Mamata Banerjee has lost the confidence of the people of West Bengal and the country. Her continuation as the Chief Minister is undefendable. I think she should immediately resign in the best interest of the people of West Bengal,” said Kesavan.

Additionally, BJP leader and National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused TMC of trying to save the accused in the case.

Earlier, while commencing the hearing on the Kolkata doctor’s alleged rape-murder, the Supreme Court observed that health professionals must return to work and that once they resume their duties, the court will prevail upon authorities to not take adverse action against them. Days after the rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata sparked nationwide protests, the apex court suo motu took up the case and directed the task force to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months.
