BJP MP Saumitra Khan and Citizens to Address Human Rights Violations in Kolkata
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 29: Saumitra Khan, a BJP MP from Bishnupur, announced that a group of concerned citizens will meet with the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to discuss events from August 27 and 28, which he described as blatant human rights violations.
In a statement, Khan said, “A group of concerned citizens, including Members of Parliament, former IPS officers, senior advocates of the Supreme Court and High Court, and Members of Legislative Assembly, will meet the acting chairperson of the NHRC on August 29 at 2 pm to submit a representation on the events of August 27 and 28 in West Bengal, which are blatant violations of human rights.”
On Wednesday, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar held a sit-in protest at Baguiati in Kolkata during the 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh’ called by the BJP. Majumdar also wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of advocating violence and inciting gatherings, which he described as revenge politics.
The BJP called for the ’12-hour Bengal Bandh’ after Kolkata police used lathi charges, water cannons, and tear gas against protestors during the ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ rally. The rally began at College Square in Kolkata, with heightened security around the West Bengal state secretariat and protestors gathering in the Santragachi area of Howrah.
On August 27, chaos erupted in Kolkata’s streets as security personnel used tear gas, water cannons, and lathi charges to disperse protestors on Howrah Bridge. The protests were in response to the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which caused national outrage and led to rallies across the country.
