BJP MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato Urges Chief Justice to Speed Up Trial in Kolkata Doctor’s Case
Kolkata (West Bengal), September 5: BJP West Bengal MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato has written a letter to Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, requesting a faster trial for the rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
In his letter, Mahato thanked the Supreme Court for taking notice of the tragic incident but expressed concerns over delays in the trial. He stated, ‘The delay in hearings and the postponement of the case are causing immense disappointment and frustration among the people of West Bengal and across the nation.’
Mahato also called for action against Kolkata Commissioner of Police, Vineet Kumar Goyal, and other officials for allegedly tampering with evidence and obstructing justice. He accused them of mishandling evidence and lacking transparency, which has led to a sense of injustice.
On August 9, the body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the hospital, sparking nationwide protests. A civic volunteer was arrested shortly after the discovery. The CBI has also arrested the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, for alleged financial misconduct.
The incident led to the West Bengal Assembly passing the ‘Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024,’ which includes provisions for increased punishment for crimes against women and requires that rape case investigations be concluded within 24 days of the initial report.
