New Delhi [India], August 8: BJP Rajya Sabha MP Gulam Ali Khan criticized opposition parties for misusing Waqf property over the past 70 years. He supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for transparency to prevent future misuse. Khan stated, “The opposition while being in power for 70 years have misused the Waqf property and hadn’t used it for the welfare of the minorities. Individual people have looted and encroached on it. PM Narendra Modi wants transparency in it.”

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah accused the NDA government of being against minorities, stating, “It shows the NDA government is against the minorities. They are not for secularism or social justice. We have been telling people of the country that they are communal parties. They are fascist and that’s why they are doing this.”

NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule expressed opposition to the bill, suggesting it be sent to a standing committee or a joint parliamentary committee for further recommendations. NCP-SCP MP Fauzia Khan added that the bill should have involved consultation with various stakeholders, calling it “an unjust bill for the Muslim community.”

Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, stated that different parties have opposed the introduction of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the House and will clarify their stance when it is brought into business.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, introduced by Kiren Rijiju, seeks to rename the Waqf Act, 1995, as the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995. It aims to clearly define “waqf” and ensure that the creation of Waqf-alal-aulad does not deny inheritance rights to women.
