Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Aparajita Sarangi stated that the 1975 Emergency is remembered as a dark period in India’s history. She emphasized that 140 crore people in the country can never forget it and that it was the doing of Congress. Sarangi said, ‘Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister at that time when the freedom of every section of the country was played with. Therefore, the BJP will remember June 26 as a Black Day every year.’

President Droupadi Murmu described the Emergency as the ‘biggest and darkest chapter’ of a direct attack on the Constitution, stating that the country emerged victorious over unconstitutional forces. Opposition leaders dismissed the President’s address as a ‘script given by the government’ and claimed there is an ‘undeclared emergency’ under the Modi government.

BJP MP Arun Govil remarked, ‘We can’t simply forget what happened in the past. Congress never mentions what they did with the Constitution but only talks about saving the Constitution now.’ BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad added, ‘It is a matter of pride for us that the President condemned the Emergency period in her address today.’

Union Ministers praised Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for his speech on the Emergency, asserting that future generations should be made aware of the period. The leaders criticized Congress for creating a ruckus while the House was condemning the Emergency. Union Minister Giriraj Singh emphasized the importance of educating the youth about the Emergency.

The Emergency, imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from June 25, 1975, to 1977, is considered one of the most controversial periods in independent India’s history. It involved political arrests, mass forced sterilization, and beautification drives. Key opposition leaders at the time, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, and Jay Prakash Narayanan, were either jailed or placed under detention.
