BJP Leader Suvendu Adhikari Criticizes Police Over Attack on Woman Constable During Protest in Kolkata

On August 17, West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticized the state police force after a woman constable was injured during a midnight protest march. The march was held in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 14.

In a post on X, the West Bengal police shared details about the incident, stating that Constable Shampa Pramanik was hit in the face by a brick thrown from the crowd. The police have arrested five people in connection with the attack and are working to ensure they are punished.

Adhikari accused the police and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of failing to provide security for women, including doctors, nurses, and policewomen. He claimed that the police were inefficient and colluded with TMC goons in the violence.

Adhikari also questioned whether the injured constable had completed her training and criticized her deployment during the protest. He demanded accountability for the attack and identification of those responsible.

On August 14, a mob of 5,000 to 7,000 people invaded RG Kar Hospital, attacking doctors and medical students and attempting to ransack the premises. The Kolkata police have arrested 19 individuals involved in the violence.

The Indian Medical Association announced a nationwide strike from August 17 to August 18 in response to the incident. The protests were sparked by the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on duty at RG Kar Medical College on August 9.
