New Delhi [India], September 3: BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla has praised the arrest of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Dr. Ghosh was arrested for alleged corruption and financial misconduct, which Poonawalla claims is a significant step towards justice for the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at the hospital on August 9.

Poonawalla criticized Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that her government protected Dr. Ghosh despite accusations from the BJP since 2023. He questioned when Banerjee would resign, accusing her leaders of threatening protestors and prioritizing the protection of Dr. Ghosh over justice for the victim.

The CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch arrested Dr. Ghosh along with three others: vendors Biplav Singha and Suman Hazara, and Afsar Ali, Dr. Ghosh’s Additional Security. The arrests followed a directive from the Calcutta High Court, which ordered the CBI to investigate the alleged corruption and financial irregularities at the college and hospital.

On August 24, the CBI registered an official FIR against Dr. Ghosh. The investigation also included a second round of polygraph tests on Dr. Ghosh related to the rape-murder case. The Calcutta High Court has given the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report, due on September 17.

Earlier, the Supreme Court ordered the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to take over the security of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital while hearing the case. The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9.
