New Delhi [India], August 20: BJP leader Shahzad Poonawala has criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. He alleged that the state government tried to suppress the truth, destroy evidence, and protect the rapist.

Poonawala stated, “The hearing that took place in the Supreme Court today makes one thing clear that instead of getting justice for the daughter, Mamata Banerjee’s government was trying to suppress the truth, destroy evidence, and save the rapist. It came to the fore in the Supreme Court that how in an organized way there was an attempt to cover up the case. This case was first given the form of suicide, the family was not given the body, they were made to wait for hours.”

He further mentioned that there was a delay in the registration of the FIR and the parents were not provided any aid. “The state government’s role was to promote the Principal and carry out construction to wipe out the evidence. 5000 goons enter the college and the police there are unable to do anything. This same question was asked by the HC and the victim’s parents. The question arises whether Mamata Banerjee will take responsibility and resign or use police force to muzzle the voice,” he added.

The Supreme Court has constituted a 10-member National Task Force to make recommendations on preventing violence and ensuring safe working conditions for medical professionals. The task force includes Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin among others. The court directed the task force to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months. The task force will also prepare an action plan to prevent gender-based violence and ensure a dignified working space for interns, residents, and non-resident doctors.

The Supreme Court also asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a status report on the investigation into the rape case. Additionally, the West Bengal government was asked to file a status report on the mob attack incident at RG Kar hospital on August 15.

On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, leading to nationwide strikes. Civil societies and doctors across the States protested against the incident, demanded severe punishment for the accused, and sought safety and security for themselves.
