Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], August 28: BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar has expressed his support for the ‘Bengal Bandh’ call, stating that the people of Bengal are angry with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He criticized her for allegedly using police and violence to intimidate people and for trying to cover up a crime against a woman doctor by calling it a suicide. Chandrasekhar emphasized the need for justice and a fair investigation.

Meanwhile, Kolkata police detained BJP leader Locket Chatterjee during the ’12-hour Bengal bandh’ protest in West Bengal. Chatterjee, along with BJP workers, was protesting at Kolkata’s Bata Chowk. She stated, “Nothing will happen, the more they detain, the more people will join the protest. This is the anger of people and they are on the road. Police can detain people but not the idea.”

BJP’s Rupa Ganuly also joined the protestors and claimed that the bandh call was successful as people stayed away from the streets. She criticized the police for their behavior and questioned their actions.

Authorities have tightened security in the state in response to the bandh call. Dendup Sherpa, Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) of Uttar Dinajpur, stated that police personnel are deployed everywhere to maintain law and order.

BJP leader Priyangu Pandey alleged that TMC members attacked and fired on his car in North 24 Parganas district. He claimed that bombs were thrown at his car and several rounds of firing occurred.

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) accused the BJP of attacking the police and trying to create anarchy. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh stated that the people of West Bengal have rejected BJP’s bandh and that the case of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder is now under CBI investigation.

On August 27, chaos erupted in Kolkata as security personnel used tear gas, water cannons, and lathicharge to disperse protestors on Howrah Bridge. The protests are in response to the alleged rape-murder of a female trainee doctor on August 9, which has caused national outrage.
