BJP Demands Resignation of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Over Doctor’s Death
New Delhi, August 21: BJP leaders have called for the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the sexual assault and death of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has dismissed these demands as baseless and political drama, noting that the case is under the Supreme Court’s observation.
Supreme Court’s Actions
The Supreme Court has formed a 10-member National Task Force to recommend measures for preventing violence and ensuring safe working conditions for medical professionals. This task force includes Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin. The court has also directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a status report on the investigation into the rape case and asked the West Bengal government to report on a mob attack at the hospital on August 15.
BJP’s Protests
West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar led a protest in Kolkata, demanding Mamata Banerjee’s resignation. The protest, which will continue until September 5, saw BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and others wearing black t-shirts to signify their demand. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari alleged that the assault and murder were coordinated efforts to erase evidence.
TMC’s Response
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh criticized the BJP’s demands, calling them baseless drama politics. He pointed out that no BJP Chief Minister resigned in similar cases in their states and questioned why doctors are not returning to work despite the Supreme Court’s oversight.
AIIMS and MHA Involvement
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi has urged its resident doctors to resume duties to ensure patient care. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has written to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal about deploying Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at RG Kar Medical College to manage the protests and ensure a stable environment for doctors.
Legal Actions
Akhtar Ali, ex-Deputy Superintendent at RG Kar Medical College, has filed a case against ex-principal Sandip Ghosh in the Calcutta High Court, alleging involvement in various scams. Ali has requested safety and security due to receiving threats.
