BJP Announces Fourth List of Candidates for Jammu and Kashmir Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its fourth list of candidates for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. The list includes:

  • Ravinder Raina for Nowshera
  • Arif Raja for Eidgah
  • Er. Aijaz Hussain for Lal Chowk
  • Dr. Ali Mohammad Mir for Khansahib
  • Zahid Hussain for Chrar-i-Sharif
  • Vibodh Gupta for Rajouri (ST)

Earlier, on August 27, the BJP issued its third list of 29 candidates for the second and third phases of the elections. This included:

  • Murtaza Khan for Mendhar
  • Sunil Bhardwaj for Ramnagar (SC)
  • Chowdhary Abdul Ghani for Poonch Haveli
  • Pawan Gupta for Udhampur West
  • Mohd Iqbal Malik for Thannamandi
  • Baldev Raj Sharma for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi

The first two lists, released on August 26, included 16 candidates. The elections will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with vote counting on October 8. Jammu and Kashmir has 90 assembly constituencies, with 7 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 9 for Scheduled Tribes (STs). There are 88.06 lakh eligible voters in the region. In the previous elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 seats, the BJP secured 25, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) won 15, and the Congress won 12. These elections are the first since the abrogation of Article 370.

BJP -: BJP stands for Bharatiya Janata Party. It is one of the major political parties in India.

Fourth List of Candidates -: This means that the BJP has already announced three lists of candidates before this one. A list of candidates is a group of people chosen to run for election.

Jammu and Kashmir -: Jammu and Kashmir is a region in northern India. It used to be a state but is now a Union Territory.

Assembly elections -: These are elections to choose representatives for the legislative assembly, which makes laws for the region.

Ravinder Raina -: Ravinder Raina is a politician from the BJP who is running for election in Nowshera.

Arif Raja -: Arif Raja is another politician from the BJP who is running for election in Eidgah.

Vibodh Gupta -: Vibodh Gupta is a BJP politician running for election in Rajouri (ST). ST stands for Scheduled Tribe, a group recognized by the government for special support.

Three phases -: The elections will happen on three different days: September 18, September 25, and October 1.

Vote counting -: This is when all the votes are counted to see who won the election. It will happen on October 8.

Abrogation of Article 370 -: Article 370 was a special law that gave Jammu and Kashmir more autonomy. It was removed in 2019, changing the region’s status.
