BJP Announces Candidates for Jammu and Kashmir Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its sixth list of ten candidates for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. The list includes RS Pathania for Udhampur East and Naseer Ahmad Lone for Bandipora.

The BJP has fielded the following candidates:

  • Ghulam Mohammad Mir from Handwara
  • Abdul Rashid Khan from Sonawari
  • Naseer Ahmad Lone from Bandipora

Election Details

The elections will be held in three phases starting from September 18, 25, and October 1, with vote counting on October 8. These are the first elections in the Union Territory since the abrogation of Article 370.

Political Manifestos

The National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party have included the restoration of Article 370 in their manifestos. The BJP, however, considers Article 370 a thing of the past. Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the opposition’s manifestos, accusing them of wanting to spread terrorism and other negative actions.

BJP’s Promises

The BJP’s manifesto, described as a ‘people’s manifesto’ by BJP J-K chief Ravinder Raina, focuses on women-led development. Key promises include:

  • Implementing ‘Maa Samman Yojana’ to provide Rs 18,000 per year to the senior most woman in every household
  • Providing assistance for Women SHGs on bank loan interest

Alliances and Support

The National Conference and Congress are contesting the elections together, with support from the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Assembly Constituencies

Jammu and Kashmir has 90 assembly constituencies, with 7 seats reserved for SCs and 9 for STs. There are 88.06 lakh eligible electors in the region.

Previous Election Results

In the previous assembly elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 seats, BJP secured 25, National Conference won 15, and Congress won 12.
