The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party have both nominated candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha Speaker election. The BJP has put forward Om Birla, who previously served as the Speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha, while the opposition INDIA bloc has nominated Congress MP K Suresh.

Both parties have issued a three-line whip to their Members of Parliament (MPs) to ensure their presence in the House for the election, which will be held on June 26. The BJP’s whip instructs MPs to be present from 11 a.m. onwards.

Rahul Gandhi, a leader from the Congress party, mentioned that the opposition is prepared to support the BJP’s candidate for Speaker, provided that the Deputy Speaker position is given to the opposition. He also criticized the treatment of opposition leaders, alleging disrespect.

Currently, BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab is serving as the pro-tem speaker. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, holds a clear majority in the Lok Sabha with 293 MPs, while the opposition INDIA bloc comprises 234 MPs.
