BJP and Congress Clash Over ‘One Nation, One Election’ Proposal
The Union Cabinet has approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, which aims to hold simultaneous Lok Sabha, Assembly, urban body, and panchayat elections within 100 days. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the decision, calling it a step towards a more vibrant democracy. He also thanked former President Ram Nath Kovind for leading the effort.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah supported the decision, stating it would lead to cleaner elections and better resource allocation. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and other BJP leaders echoed these sentiments, highlighting the potential for faster development and reduced election costs.
However, opposition parties, led by Congress, strongly opposed the proposal. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge argued that it is impractical and harmful to democracy. Other opposition leaders, including JMM MP Mahua Maji and AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi, expressed concerns about the impact on regional parties and the need for constitutional amendments.
The proposal has sparked a significant debate, with both sides presenting strong arguments for and against the idea of holding all elections simultaneously.
