Biplab Kumar Deb and Rahul Gandhi Take Oath in 18th Lok Sabha

Former Tripura Chief Minister and BJP leader Biplab Kumar Deb took his oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha. The oath was administered by Lok Sabha pro-tem speaker and BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab.

Biplab Kumar Deb represents the Tripura West Constituency. He was among the remaining MPs who took their oaths after 262 newly elected MPs, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, did so on the inaugural session of the 18th Lok Sabha.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also took his oath today, holding a copy of the Constitution in his hand.

Meanwhile, the BJP’s top leadership efforts to reach a consensus on the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha did not succeed. The INDIA bloc nominated 8-time MP K Suresh for the post, while BJP’s Kota MP Om Birla, who served as the Speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha, also filed his nomination. This marks the first time elections will be held for the Speaker of the lower house, as traditionally the Speaker and Deputy Speaker have been elected by consensus between the ruling party and the opposition.
