BIMSTEC Business Summit in New Delhi: Boosting Cooperation Among South Asian Countries
The two-day BIMSTEC Business Summit held in New Delhi highlighted the importance of increasing cooperation among member countries. BIMSTEC, which stands for Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, was first established in June 1997 and now includes Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Nepal.
The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) released a study with recommendations to improve economic cooperation among these countries. The study suggests expanding areas of cooperation such as skill development, e-commerce, and digital infrastructure. It also emphasizes the importance of women-led development and industry engagement.
With a combined GDP of USD 4.5 trillion and a population of 1.7 billion, BIMSTEC countries have significant potential for growth. However, intra-regional trade remains low. The CII study recommends finalizing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to promote investment, job creation, and technology partnerships.
The sixth BIMSTEC Summit, set to take place in Thailand this year, will be an opportunity to enhance business engagement and deepen economic linkages within the region. Greater industry collaborations and joint projects could accelerate growth and development, benefiting employment and income generation.
