Big Voter Turnout in Jammu and Kashmir Elections, Says DIG Shridhar Patil
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shridhar Patil reported that there were long queues of voters outside polling stations in Jammu and Kashmir as voting began for 24 assembly seats. He noted that almost 60% of voting had taken place peacefully, with people celebrating the ‘festival of democracy’.
Patil assured that adequate security was in place, with state police, CAPF, and the Army working together. He mentioned that recent terror attacks had not affected the elections, as indicated by the large voter turnout.
By 3 pm, Kishtwar district had the highest voter turnout at 70.03%, followed by Doda at 61.90%, Ramban at 60.04%, Kulgam at 50.57%, Shopian at 46.84%, and Anantnag at 46.67%. Pulwama had the lowest turnout at 36.90%. The overall turnout was 50.65%.
Voting, which started at 7 am, will end at 6 pm. There was a brief halt in Kishtwar due to a protest, but it was resolved quickly. Kashmiri migrant voters also participated under heavy security in Jammu.
BJP’s Tarun Chugh praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the high voter enthusiasm. BJP candidate Shagun Parihar criticized opposition candidates for trying to undermine her. The first phase of voting covers 24 constituencies, with the next phases on September 25 and October 1, and results on October 8.
