Big Drug Bust in Tripura: 355 kg of Cannabis Seized, Driver Arrested

In Agartala, Tripura, local authorities carried out a major operation on Saturday. They intercepted a truck at Chandrapur ISBT after receiving a tip-off about prohibited items being transported.

Seizure Details

SP Dr. Kiran Kumar of West Tripura district reported that 45 packets of cannabis, weighing approximately 355 kilograms, were seized. The haul is valued at around Rs 7 million.

Arrest and Investigation

The truck driver, Mithun Karmakar, aged 35 from Ramnagar, was immediately taken into custody. Initially, the truck appeared empty, but a hidden false chamber was discovered. A mechanic was called to open the chamber, revealing the cannabis packets.

Dr. Kiran Kumar stated, “Today, based on information received, we intercepted a 12-wheeler truck at Chandrapur ISBT after alerting the East Police Station about some prohibited items. Initially, we found the truck empty, but then discovered a false chamber. After calling a mechanic to open the false chamber, we recovered 45 packets of cannabis weighing approximately 355 kilograms, valued at around 7 million. We arrested a driver named Mithun Karmakar, (35), from Ramnagar.”

Further Detentions

Three others were detained for further questioning. Despite questioning, Mithun claimed he was heading to Meghalaya. The interrogation is ongoing to determine where the cargo was loaded and its intended destination.
