Big Drop in Naxal Violence: Only 38 Districts Affected in 2024, Says Minister Nityanand Rai
The Ministry of Home Affairs reported a significant reduction in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) violence, with affected districts dropping from 126 in 2013 to 38 by April 2024. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai credited the 2015 national policy for this decline.
States Affected
Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, and West Bengal are the nine states where naxalism is still present. Chhattisgarh and Odisha are the most affected states.

15 districts: Bijapur, Bastar, Dantewada, Dhamtari, Gariyaband, Kanker, Kondagaon, Mahasamund, Narayanpur, Rajnandgaon, Mohalla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki, Khairgarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai, Sukma, Kabirdham, and Mungeli.
Odisha
7 districts: Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Malkangiri, Nabrangpur, Nuapada, and Rayagada.
Other States
Jharkhand: 5 districts (Giridih, Gumla, Latehar, Lohardaga, and West Singhbhum).
Madhya Pradesh: 3 districts (Balaghat, Mandla, and Dindori).
Kerala: 2 districts (Wayanad and Kannur).
Maharashtra: 2 districts (Gadchiroli and Gondia).
Telangana: 2 districts (Bhadradri-Kothagudem and Mulugu).
Andhra Pradesh: 1 district (Alluri Sitaramraju).
West Bengal: 1 district (Jhargram).
Decline in Violence
LWE incidents have decreased by 73% since 2010, and deaths have reduced by 86% from 1,005 in 2010 to 138 in 2023. In the first half of 2024, there was a 32% reduction in LWE incidents and a 17% reduction in deaths compared to the same period in 2023.
Police Stations Reporting LWE Violence
The number of police stations reporting LWE violence has significantly reduced from 465 in 2010 to 171 in 2023. In 2024, LWE violence was reported from 89 police stations across 30 districts.
