Bhupen Kumar Borah Resigns from Assam Sonmilita Morcha

In Guwahati, Assam, Bhupen Kumar Borah, the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), has resigned from his position as the President of the Assam Sonmilita Morcha, a forum of opposition political parties. The resignation follows a disagreement over the nomination process for the Behali Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) bye-election.

Dispute Over Candidate Nomination

During a meeting on October 18, a proposal was made to form a 5-member committee to decide on the nomination for the Behali LAC bye-election. The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) had requested a candidate nomination. However, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has not accepted the committee’s recommendation, leading to Borah’s resignation.

Pressure and Resignation

Borah stated that he faced pressure to enforce a decision he could not execute, prompting his resignation. He emphasized the importance of opposition unity, as highlighted by Rahul Gandhi during his visit to Assam.

Political Developments in Assam

The Assam Sonmilita Morcha demanded a candidate from outside Congress for the Behali bye-election. Meanwhile, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of the BJP, announced Diptimoyee Choudhury as their candidate for the Bongaigaon seat. The BJP and its allies have also named candidates for other seats, including Behali, Dholai, and Samaguri.

The Congress party has announced its candidates for Sidli, Bongaigaon, Samaguri, and Dholai seats. The bye-elections are scheduled for November 13, with results to be announced on November 23.
