Bhavinaben Patel Shines in Paris Paralympics 2024
Indian para Table Tennis player Bhavinaben Patel has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Women’s Singles WS4 category in the ongoing Paris Paralympics 2024. She won her match in three straight sets (11-3, 11-6, 11-7) against Mexico’s Martha Verdin on Sunday.
However, Sonalben Patel did not qualify for the quarterfinals, losing her match in the Round of 16 against Croatia’s Andela Muzinic Vincetic with scores of 3-11, 12-10, 7-11, 5-11 in Women’s Singles – WS3.
Earlier on August 30, Bhavina and Sonalben were defeated in the Women’s Doubles table tennis quarterfinal by Korea’s Young A Jung and Sunghye Moon, with a scoreline of 5-11, 6-11, 11-9, 6-11.
India’s Medal Wins
Nishad Kumar won silver in the men’s high jump T47 on early Monday, bringing India’s total medal count to seven at the ongoing Paris Paralympics. The medals include one gold, two silvers, and four bronzes.
On Sunday, Indian parasprinter Preeti Pal clinched the bronze medal in the 200m T-35 with a time of 30.01 seconds, making her the first-ever Indian woman athlete to win two medals in track & field events at the Paralympics or Olympics. She previously won bronze in the T35 100m race with a personal best time of 14.21 seconds.
On Saturday, Rubina finished third and bagged a bronze medal in the P2-Women’s 10M Air Pistol SH-1 final with a total of 211.1 points.
On Friday, reigning Paralympic champion Avani Lekhara won gold in the women’s 10m air rifle final, scoring 249.7 points, her personal best. Shooter Mona Agarwal also won bronze in the same event.
Manish Narwal secured a silver medal in the men’s P1 10m air pistol SH1 competition.
India’s Largest Paralympics Contingent
This year, India has sent its largest Paralympics contingent ever, with 84 athletes across 12 sports. India’s participation in the Paris 2024 Paralympics marks a significant increase in both numbers and medal hopes, aiming to surpass its previous achievements in Tokyo 2020, where India won 19 medals, including five golds, eight silvers, and six bronzes.
