Ben Stokes Praises Joe Root as England Leads 2-0 Against Sri Lanka
Ahead of the third Test match against Sri Lanka, England’s batting allrounder Ben Stokes praised his teammate Joe Root, calling him an ‘amazing’ player. Root recently surpassed Alastair Cook to register the most centuries by an English batter in Test cricket, scoring his 34th century against Sri Lanka.
Currently, England leads the Test series 2-0 after winning the first two matches. In the first game, England secured a five-wicket victory, and in the second match, they won by 190 runs.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Stokes said, ‘He is an amazing player. I don’t think there is much more I can say about him, I have pretty much done all the superlatives with Joe in the 10 or 12 years I have played with him.’ Stokes also described Root as an unselfish player who always puts the team first.
Recapping the second Test match, England scored 427 runs in the first innings, with Root scoring 143 and Gus Atkinson 118. Asitha Fernando was the top bowler for Sri Lanka with 5/102. In response, Sri Lanka managed 196 runs, with Kamindu Mendis scoring 74. England’s bowlers shared the wickets, with Chris Woakes, Olly Stone, Gus Atkinson, and Matthew Potts taking two each.
In England’s second innings, they were bowled out for 251 runs, with Root scoring another century (103). Sri Lanka’s bowlers, Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara, took three wickets each. Chasing 483, Sri Lanka was all out for 292, despite half-centuries from Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal, and Dhananjaya de Silva. Atkinson took 5/62 and was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his all-round performance.
