Bastar to Become India’s New Rubber Production Hub

Introduction

Bastar, a region in Chhattisgarh, is known for its history of insurgency. However, it is now on the path to becoming a major hub for rubber production in India.

Initiative by Shaheed Gundadhur College

Shaheed Gundadhur College of Agriculture and Research Station, with support from the Chhattisgarh Government and Rubber Board Kottayam, has started planting rubber on their land and on local farmers’ land. Initial results are promising.

Economic Benefits for Farmers

Dr. R S Netam, Dean of the college, explained that the rubber plantations aim to improve farmers’ incomes. Rubber crops have a lifespan of 60 years and start generating income after seven years, continuing for up to 40 years.

Growth and Future Plans

In one year, the planted saplings have grown to a height of 3-4 feet. Currently, rubber is planted on 2.5 acres within the college campus and 3 acres of local farmers’ land. Future expansion will depend on the growth of these plants over the next seven years.

Training and Employment

Farmers will receive training in rubber collection, cutting, and agronomy practices to ensure good pricing. As production increases, it is expected to attract rubber industries, generating employment in the region.

Memorandum of Understanding

In 2023, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rubber Research Institute of India (Kottayam) to support rubber cultivation in Bastar.
