Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Resigns, Parliament Dissolved, and Khaleda Zia Released
On August 6, President Mohammed Shahabuddin of Bangladesh announced the dissolution of the country’s parliament following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This move aims to pave the way for an interim administration.
The decision was made after a meeting involving the heads of the three armed forces, political leaders, civil society representatives, and leaders of the Students Against Discrimination movement. The president’s office confirmed the dissolution in a press release.
Additionally, Khaleda Zia, the Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a former Prime Minister, was released from jail. The release process for those detained during the student protests from July 1 to August 5 has also begun.
Khaleda Zia, who is 78 years old and in poor health, was previously sentenced to 17 years in prison for corruption in 2018. The BNP claims the charges were politically motivated, while Hasina’s administration denied these allegations.
Sheikh Hasina resigned amid mounting protests led by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs. She has since traveled to India, though her next destination remains unclear.
In Dhaka, leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement have proposed Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus to lead the interim government to address the country’s ongoing challenges.
