Bangladesh’s Interim Leader Muhammad Yunus Addresses UN Amidst Protests
The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called back five of its diplomats to Dhaka. These include representatives from India, Australia, Belgium, Portugal, and the United Nations. The diplomats are Mustafizur Rahman, Muhammad Abdul Muhith, M Allama Siddiqui, Mahbub Hassan Saleh, and Rezina Ahmed.
Recently, Bangladesh experienced significant political changes. Sheikh Hasina was ousted following large student-led protests that turned into a major anti-government movement. This led to the formation of an interim government, with Muhammad Yunus sworn in as Chief Advisor on August 8. During this period, there were reports of violence, especially against minorities like Hindus.
Last month, Muhammad Yunus addressed the United Nations General Assembly. He praised the youth of Bangladesh for their role in the protests and criticized the previous government as “autocratic” and “undemocratic.” Yunus expressed hope for a future defined by the values of freedom and justice, reminiscent of Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.
However, Yunus’s speech at the UNGA was met with protests outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Demonstrators voiced their opposition to Yunus and his leadership.
