Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Talks About Sheikh Hasina’s Extradition and Rohingya Refugees

Dhaka, Bangladesh – Mohammed Touhid Hossain, the foreign affairs advisor for Bangladesh’s interim government, discussed the potential extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the country’s stance on Rohingya refugees in a recent interview.

Extradition of Sheikh Hasina

Hossain mentioned that with numerous cases against Hasina, Bangladesh might request her extradition from India, which could create an awkward situation for the Indian government. Hasina fled to India on August 5 after violent student-led protests against her. Complaints have been filed against her in the International Criminal Court for alleged human rights violations.

Statements from India

Hossain conveyed that Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, head of the interim government, is unhappy with statements from Hasina in India. Yunus has expressed his displeasure to the Indian envoy.

Upcoming Elections

Hossain indicated that more information about elections in Bangladesh will be available by September. The interim government is focused on restoring normalcy.

Rohingya Refugees

Hossain emphasized that Bangladesh cannot accept more Rohingya refugees and urged other countries, including India, to help. He stressed the need for international pressure on the Arakan Army to prevent further displacement.

Passport Cancellations

The interim government has canceled the passports of Sheikh Hasina, her advisers, former cabinet members, and their families. Diplomatic passports have also been revoked.

Bangladesh is currently experiencing political instability, with Hasina resigning on August 5 amid protests. Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of the interim government on August 8.
