Bangladesh’s Dhaka-Mawa Expressway Renamed Amid Political Unrest After Sheikh Hasina’s Resignation
In Bangladesh, a group of local Madrasa students removed the nameplate of the ‘Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Expressway’, commonly known as the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway, in Munshiganj. They replaced it with a banner reading ‘Father of the Nation Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) Expressway’.
Maulana Obaidullah Kashemi, a Hefajat Islam leader and vice principal of Jamia Islamia Halimia Madhupur Madrasa, confirmed the action and announced plans to rename another toll plaza in Bhanga. Dewan Abul Kashem Mohammad Nahin Reza, Executive Engineer for Munshiganj Road and Highway, stated that state infrastructure titles cannot be changed without a government gazette. Toll collection has been suspended since August 5, and the damaged toll plaza is expected to be restored in four to five days if the situation improves.
Bangladesh is currently facing a fluid political situation. Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post as Prime Minister on August 5 amid mounting protests, primarily led by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs. Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government on August 8, three days after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. Seventeen members of the interim government took their oath at a ceremony in Dhaka, with Nobel laureate economist Muhammad Yunus, 84, being sworn in as the chief advisor, equivalent to a Prime Minister. The oath was administered by Bangladesh’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
