Bangladeshi Activist Shahriar Kabir Arrested in Dhaka

Dhaka, Bangladesh – On September 17, Bangladesh Police arrested Shahriar Kabir, a top leader of the Ektarer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, an advocacy group demanding trials for war criminals from the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war against Pakistan.

A police official confirmed, “We have arrested Shahriar Kabir. There are 10 cases against him for murders and other crimes.” Kabir will be produced in court later in the day.

Kazi Mukul, Executive President of the Ektarer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, stated, “The police have detained Shahriar Kabir from his residence in Mohakhali in capital Dhaka on Monday midnight.”

The Ektarer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee was established in January 1992 to advocate for the trial of those who committed crimes against humanity during the War of Independence from Pakistan.

On August 20, Mufti Harun Izhar Chowdhury, Hefazat-e-Islam’s joint secretary, filed a complaint with the International Crimes Tribunal, accusing former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 23 others, including Kabir, of crimes against humanity and mass killing related to a 2013 rally.

Shahriar Kabir is a Bangladeshi journalist, filmmaker, human rights activist, and author of several books on human rights, communism, fundamentalism, history, and the Bangladesh war of independence.

Earlier, Bangladesh police detained two senior journalists, Shyamal Dutta and Mozammel Babu, near the India-Bangladesh border. They are alleged to be close to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after being ousted by a student-led movement that resulted in over 600 deaths. An interim government led by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus was formed.
