Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Resigns and Flees Country Amid Protests

Protestors in Bangladesh stormed the Prime Minister’s official residence on Monday after Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country with her sister, Sheikh Rehana. Local media reported that they fled to an undisclosed location. A Bangladesh Air Force C130J was seen entering Indian airspace, but it is unclear if Sheikh Hasina was on board.

Protestors set fire to the Awami League’s Dhaka district office and Sheikh Hasina’s office in Dhanmondi. They celebrated at the Prime Minister’s residence, chanting slogans and cheering.

Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff General Waqar-uz-Zaman confirmed the resignation in a televised address and urged protestors to remain calm and return home. He stated that an interim government will be formed and appealed for peace and order in the country.

General Waqar-uz-Zaman met with representatives of the BNP, Jatiya Party, and Jamaat-e-Islami to discuss the political transition. Teachers Afis Nazrul and Jonaid Saki were also present, but student representatives could not be contacted. Further discussions about the interim government will take place at Bangabhvan.
