Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Resigns Amid Nationwide Protests
Dhaka, Bangladesh – On August 5, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position. Chief of Army Staff General Waqar-uz-Zaman announced that an interim government will now run the country. He assured the public that all ‘murders will be judged’ and called for an end to the nationwide violence.
General Waqar-uz-Zaman urged the people to trust the Army and maintain peace. He said, ‘Maintain peace and order in the country. You trust me, let’s work together. Please help. I won’t get anything by fighting. Avoid conflict. We have built a beautiful country together.’
In a meeting with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the Jatiya Party, and Jamaat-e-Islami, along with teachers Afis Nazrul and Jonayet Saki, the Army Chief discussed the formation of the interim government. He advised students to remain calm and stated that there was no need for a countrywide curfew or emergency declaration.
Earlier reports indicated that Sheikh Hasina left Dhaka in a military helicopter amid the violence. While there was speculation she might have gone to India, this was not confirmed. Protesters entered her official residence, Ganabhaban, and vandalized the Home Minister’s home in Dhanmondi.
The unrest was fueled by the Anti-Discrimination Students’ Movement, which demanded Hasina’s resignation. Thousands joined the ‘March to Dhaka’ program, moving towards Farmgate. The movement’s key organizer, Nahid Islam, announced the demand at a rally on August 3, following Hasina’s call for students to meet her to end the violence.
