Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina highlighted the strong and growing relationship between Bangladesh and India after her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in various sectors.

Gratitude and Historical Ties

PM Hasina expressed her gratitude to PM Modi for the invitation, marking her first bilateral visit abroad since Bangladesh’s recent elections. She emphasized the enduring bond between the two nations, which began during Bangladesh’s War of Liberation in 1971. She paid homage to the Indian heroes who sacrificed their lives for Bangladesh’s independence.

High-Level Engagements

In recent years, there have been many high-level engagements between the two countries. Notable visits include Indian leaders attending significant celebrations in Bangladesh and PM Hasina’s visit to India in 2022 and participation in the G20 Summit in 2023.

Productive Discussions

During the current visit, both leaders discussed politics, security, trade, connectivity, water-sharing, power, energy, and regional cooperation. They reaffirmed their commitment to mutual prosperity and progress. PM Hasina mentioned the future plans for a smart Bangladesh by 2041 and a developed India by 2047.

Further Meetings

PM Hasina’s visit also includes meetings with the Vice President and President of India, which are expected to further strengthen bilateral ties. She reiterated her invitation to PM Modi to visit Bangladesh soon.

PM Hasina is on a two-day State visit to India from June 21 to 22.
