Bangladesh Minority Alliance Rallies for Safety and Rights in Dhaka
On Friday, a significant rally was held at the central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka by the Bangladesh Combined Minority Alliance. Thousands from minority communities across Bangladesh gathered to demand the government accept their eight-point agenda to ensure their safety and well-being. The rally, organized ahead of Durga Puja, saw participation from spiritual leaders, students, and concerned citizens.
The alliance highlighted the atrocities faced by minorities since August 5, including arson, vandalism, and threats. The political shift in Bangladesh, which saw Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ousted and replaced by an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, has been linked to increased attacks on minorities. However, the interim government claims these incidents are political, not religious.
Speakers at the rally called for an end to communal attacks, justice for victims, and the implementation of their demands. These include forming a “Neutral Investigation Commission,” establishing a “Fact-track Trial Tribunal,” enacting a “Minority Protection Act,” and forming a “Ministry of Minority Affairs.” They also seek upgrades to religious welfare trusts, a law for property recovery, and facilities for minority students in educational institutions. Additionally, they demand a 5-day public holiday for Durga Puja and leave for other religious festivals.
