Skipper Shanto Reflects on Poor Decisions

In a thrilling match held in Kingstown, St Vincent, Bangladesh faced an eight-run defeat against Afghanistan in the Super Eights of the T20 World Cup 2024. Bangladesh’s captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, acknowledged that poor decisions during the middle overs of their batting cost them the game.

Shanto himself had a tough time, scoring only 5 runs from 5 balls. He mentioned that their strategy was to play aggressively in the first six overs, but the middle order failed to execute the plan. Despite this, he praised the team’s bowling and fielding efforts throughout the tournament.

Afghanistan, led by Rashid Khan, chose to bat first and scored 115-5, thanks to Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 43 runs. Rishad Hossain was the star bowler for Bangladesh, taking three wickets for 26 runs. Due to rain, the second inning was reduced to 19 overs, setting a target of 114 runs for Bangladesh.

Litton Das was the standout batter for Bangladesh, scoring 54* runs. However, Afghanistan’s bowlers, Naveen-ul-Haq and Rashid Khan, each took four wickets, leading their team to victory. This defeat also resulted in Australia’s exit from the tournament, as they finished third in Group 1 of the Super Eights with just two points.
