Bangladesh Coach Hathurusinghe Praises Mehidy Hasan Miraz as Shakib Al Hasan Nears Retirement
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], September 17: Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe has named Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the player ready to step up when veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan decides to retire. Shakib, 37, is nearing the end of his career and may retire from ODI cricket after next year’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
Hathurusinghe highlighted Shakib’s significant contributions to Bangladesh cricket, noting his ability to balance the team with his all-round skills and vast experience. He said, “Shakib has always played a huge part in Bangladesh cricket whenever he is available and playing well. He gives us the luxury to balance the team the way we want, whether we want to play extra bowlers or extra batsmen because of his all-round capabilities.”
Miraz has shown his potential, especially during Bangladesh’s historic Test series win over Pakistan, where he scored 155 runs at an average of 77.50 and took 10 wickets at an average of 18.60. Hathurusinghe praised Miraz, saying, “He is the most improved Bangladesh cricketer for the last five to six years. He is ready to take over whenever Shakib moves out. He has developed his batting, and his bowling has always been his strength.”
Bangladesh faces a significant challenge in their upcoming Test series in India, particularly from the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. To counter this, they will rely on experienced batter Mushfiqur Rahim, who has been practicing sweep shots against off-spinners. Hathurusinghe praised Mushfiqur’s preparation and professionalism, comparing him to cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.
The two-match series will begin on Thursday in Chennai at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, with the second game starting on September 27 in Kanpur.
