Bangladesh BNP Rejects Call to Remove President Mohammed Shahabuddin Amid Protests
In Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), a major political party, has opposed the demand to remove President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The Anti-discrimination Student Movement, which previously led to the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, met with BNP leaders to seek their support for the President’s removal. However, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakrul Islam Alamgir stated that the party would not make a hasty decision and would discuss the matter internally.
BNP leaders expressed concerns that removing the President could create a constitutional vacuum and delay upcoming elections. Salahuddin Ahmed, a BNP leader, emphasized the potential constitutional issues that could arise from the President’s removal.
The Anti-discrimination Student Movement has announced a 5-point demand, including the President’s resignation, during a rally in Dhaka. Protesters briefly sieged the presidential palace, Banga Bhaban, but later withdrew to engage in talks with political leaders.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin, also known as Chuppu, was elected unopposed in 2023 as the 16th President of Bangladesh, nominated by the Awami League. He recently stated in an interview that he does not possess Sheikh Hasina’s resignation letter.
The student movement has also called for the abolition of the 1972 constitution and the drafting of a new one for 2024. Following their demands, the interim government banned the Bangladesh Chatra League, a student organization linked to the Awami League.
Two months ago, the student-led movement resulted in the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after protests and clashes that led to over 600 deaths, including 44 policemen. Hasina fled to India, and an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus was established.
