Dhaka [Bangladesh], September 18: The interim government of Bangladesh has given the army special powers to help keep the country safe. This decision was made late on Tuesday and allows the army to have more authority for the next 60 days.

The Ministry of Public Administration issued the order, which means only commissioned officers of the Bangladesh Army can use these powers all over Bangladesh. Lt Col Sami ud Doula Chowdhury from the Inter Services Public Relations Directorate confirmed this news.

Previously, under Sheikh Hasina’s government, a curfew was imposed on July 19, and the army was deployed to help civil authorities. Sheikh Hasina was ousted from her position as Prime Minister after intense protests and clashes that resulted in over 600 deaths. She fled to India on August 5, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus now leads the interim government.

A senior army general explained that the army’s main job is to protect Bangladesh’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. They also help with nation-building, disaster management, and internal security. The general highlighted the army’s international reputation, especially in UN peacekeeping missions.
