Banana Leaves Prices Soar in Thoothukudi for Ganesh Chaturthi and Weddings
In Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, the prices of banana leaves have increased significantly due to high demand for Ganesh Chaturthi and Subha Muhurtham, a special day for weddings and ceremonies. Banana farming is crucial in Thoothukudi, and both bananas and their leaves are transported in large quantities across Tamil Nadu.
With the celebrations on Saturday, banana leaves have been auctioned in large quantities. Farmers from areas like Kurumpur, Eral, Sairapuram, Korampallam, and Vazhavallan have harvested and brought banana leaves to the market. Last week, a bundle of banana leaves sold for around Rs 1,000, but now it costs between Rs 3,500 and Rs 6,300. Traders expect the prices to remain high until September 15.
Similarly, the price of bananas has also increased slightly. A bunch of bananas used for pooja and making sweets is being sold for up to Rs 600, with the Mars variety reaching up to Rs 800.
Ganesh Chaturthi, a ten-day festival starting on September 7, celebrates Ganesha as the ‘God of New Beginnings’ and the ‘Remover of Obstacles.’ The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India, with people bringing Ganesha idols to their homes, fasting, preparing delicious foods, and visiting pandals.
