Baloch National Movement to Protest in London Against Pakistan’s Actions in Balochistan
The United Kingdom chapter of the Baloch National Movement (BNM) announced a protest in London’s Trafalgar Square on August 5. This protest aims to highlight the atrocities committed by Pakistan against the peaceful people of Balochistan.
In a post on X, BNM stated, “The BNM UK chapter has announced a protest against the violent actions of the state of Pakistan aimed at stopping the peaceful Baloch Raaji Muchi. This protest is part of a series of demonstrations called on by Baloch National Movement Chairman Dr. Naseem Baluch with participation from all BNM chapters.”
Human rights abuses in Balochistan are on the rise, with Pakistani security forces using excessive force against Baloch protesters. This is seen as a severe violation of the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression protected under international law.
The situation has garnered international attention. UK lawmaker John McDonnell introduced a resolution in the UK Parliament condemning the actions of Pakistani security forces. Baloch rights activist Jamal Baloch also organized a protest in front of the International Court of Justice in the Netherlands, urging the international community to stop the violence in Balochistan.
Over the past five days, many people have been killed and injured by Pakistani forces. Protesters allege that Pakistani defence forces are trying to prevent them from participating in nationwide gatherings that hold the government accountable for their actions against the Baloch community.
Human Rights Watch has urged Pakistani authorities to show restraint, release detained peaceful protesters, and restore internet access. Patricia Gossman, Associate Asia Director at Human Rights Watch, emphasized the need for Pakistani authorities to respect the right to peaceful protest and use only necessary force when nonviolent means fail.
