Baku Launches Baku Call on Climate Action for Peace at COP29
The COP29 Presidency has introduced the Baku Call on Climate Action for Peace, Relief, and Recovery (BCCAP) in Azerbaijan. This initiative aims to tackle the link between climate change, conflict, and humanitarian needs. Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeyhun Bayramov, announced the Call during the “Climate and Peace: Enabling Joint Action to Leave No One Behind” panel, marking the start of COP29 Peace, Relief, and Recovery Day.
The event gathered ministers and envoys from various countries to strategize on preventing conflicts and supporting climate-vulnerable nations. The Baku Climate and Peace Action Hub was established as a coordination platform to address these challenges. The Hub will host the Secretariat in Baku and work with initiatives like the COP27 Climate Responses for Sustaining Peace and Germany’s Climate for Peace Initiative.
The Baku Call emphasizes sustainable water management, climate-resilient agriculture, and land rehabilitation. COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev highlighted the importance of peace-sensitive climate action, especially for vulnerable groups like women and children. The initiative was developed with input from international partners, aiming to amplify commitments to peace-sensitive climate action.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov expressed gratitude for the trust placed in Azerbaijan to host the Hub, emphasizing the need for bold solutions to transform climate and peace challenges into opportunities for development.
