In Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, security was heightened outside the district hospital after two individuals involved in recent violence were admitted following an encounter with the police. On October 17, Sarfaraz and Mohammad Talib were injured while attempting to flee to Nepal and were subsequently shot in the leg by the police.

Police Action and Arrests

Amitabh Yash, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Special Task Force, Uttar Pradesh, confirmed the arrest of five main accused in the case. He stated, “A short exchange of fire took place in which two people were injured. The injured are Sarfaraz and Mohammad Talib. There is no death and the injured have been taken to the hospital.”

SP Bahraich, Vrinda Shukla, also confirmed the arrests and injuries, stating, “5 people have been arrested. Two of them have been injured in police firing. I am here to assess their condition.”

Community Clashes

The violence stemmed from a clash between two communities during the Durga idol immersion procession in the Mahasi area, resulting in the death of Ramgopal Mishra and injuries to several others.

Political Reactions

Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu commented on the police action, emphasizing that officers do not shoot to kill but to stop fleeing suspects. He praised the strict measures taken by the Yogi Adityanath-led government. BJP leader Syed Zafar Islam defended the police, stating that the protocol was followed, and the shots were meant to incapacitate the accused.
