Bahraich Forest Department Intensifies Search for ‘Killer’ Wolves

In Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, the forest department is working tirelessly to capture two remaining ‘killer’ wolves. The fear of wolf attacks has gripped the local population, prompting the forest department to take rigorous measures.

Efforts by the Forest Department

General Manager of the Forest Department, Sanjay Pathak, explained that the team is monitoring the affected areas 24/7. They are using sheep instead of goats to lure the wolves, as sheep are the wolves’ preferred prey. This strategy aims to change the wolves’ behavior and reduce the threat to humans.

Pathak also mentioned that misinformation and false sightings are complicating the search efforts. The team often finds jackals instead of wolves, wasting valuable time. To combat this, snap cameras have been installed near the wolves’ habitat to track their movements.

Shelter Homes for Villagers

In response to the wolf attacks, the Bahraich district administration has converted the Panchayat Bhawan in Chandpaiya village into a shelter home. This provides a safe place for villagers who fear wolf attacks or have dilapidated homes. The shelter home is equipped with drinking water and toilets, and local officials are ensuring the well-being of the residents.

Current Status

So far, four wolves have been captured. Drone surveillance continues, with recent visuals showing a vast stretch of agricultural land under watch. Forest officials are conducting search operations based on thermal drone data to locate and capture the remaining wolves.
