Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer Praises India’s Role in Global Peace During Meeting with PM Modi

Vienna [Austria], July 10: Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has called India an ‘important, influential and credit-worthy’ country that can play a crucial role in global peace processes, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He made these remarks during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Vienna.

India’s Role in Global Peace

Nehammer highlighted India’s participation in the Swiss Peace Summit on Ukraine as a founding member of BRICS. He emphasized the importance of India’s unique position in the Global South and its role in future peace summits.

‘India is the biggest democracy in the world. Therefore, India’s role, especially for Austria, is more than important when it comes to the peace process and future peace summits,’ Nehammer said. He also noted Austria’s availability as a neutral site for dialogue.

Discussions on Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Nehammer expressed the importance of hearing PM Modi’s personal assessment of Russia’s intentions in the ongoing war in Ukraine. ‘Our shared objective is to achieve a comprehensive, just and permanent peace in line with the UN Charter,’ he added.

Austria’s Support for Ukraine

Nehammer mentioned Austria’s substantial contribution to Ukraine, including 250 million Euros in bilateral aid, and its alignment with EU policies for a free and prospering Ukraine.

Historic Visit

This visit marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Austria in 41 years, with the last visit by Indira Gandhi in 1983. PM Modi’s visit also coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Austria.
