Austrian Authorities Foil Plot to Attack Taylor Swift Concert in Vienna
An 18-year-old Iraqi national was arrested in Vienna for plotting an attack on a Taylor Swift concert, according to Austrian Minister Gerhard Karner. This arrest follows the detention of two other teenagers, aged 17 and 19, who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
International intelligence agencies helped Austrian authorities uncover the plot. The 19-year-old suspect had quit his job on July 25, stating he had ‘something big’ planned, and intended to detonate a device at the concert venue. The 17-year-old suspect was arrested in Vienna on Wednesday afternoon.
Due to the foiled plot, three of Taylor Swift’s concerts in Vienna were canceled. Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer called the cancellations a ‘bitter disappointment for all fans in Austria’ but emphasized that a tragedy had been prevented.
Swift’s Eras Tour, which began in Glendale, Arizona on March 18, 2023, has traveled through the United States, South America, Asia, and Australia. The tour is currently in its European leg, with upcoming performances at Wembley Stadium in London from August 15-20.
