Atishi to Take Over as Delhi CM Until Elections, Says Gopal Rai

New Delhi [India], September 17: Delhi Minister Gopal Rai announced that Atishi will take on the responsibilities of Chief Minister until the next elections, following Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation. Kejriwal proposed Atishi as his successor during a party meeting, and the decision was unanimously supported.

Gopal Rai stated, “When he (Arvind Kejriwal) decided to resign, a legislative party meeting was held today. In the meeting, it was unanimously decided that until the next elections, which we want to be held in October-November at the earliest, and people make Arvind Kejriwal the Delhi CM with a thumping majority, Atishi would carry out the responsibilities as the new CM.”

Rai added that Atishi has been given two main responsibilities: to continue the work despite hindrances by the BJP and to protect the public of Delhi from all tactics used by the Aam Aadmi Party.

Delhi government minister Kailash Gehlot, who was also seen as a potential candidate for the CM position, said, “Everyone unanimously agreed on Atishi’s name.”

On Saturday, Kejriwal announced that he would resign and would not resume as the CM until the people of Delhi declared him “honest.” He has called for advancing polls in the national capital to November this year, ahead of the scheduled February elections. Kejriwal stated that if re-elected by the public, it would serve as a “certificate” of his honesty.

The announcement came two days after Kejriwal was released from Tihar jail on bail in a corruption case related to the alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam. The Supreme Court imposed conditions on his release, including refraining from public comments about the case and attending all hearings before the trial court unless exempted.
