Atishi Becomes Delhi’s New Chief Minister After Kejriwal Resigns

Atishi has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of Delhi after Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation. She expressed her gratitude towards Kejriwal and promised to work hard to ensure his re-election in the upcoming elections.

During a press conference, Atishi said, “First, I would like to thank the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for giving me such a big responsibility and showing trust in me. This can happen only in Aam Aadmi Party that a first-time politician becomes Chief Minister of a state.”

She also mentioned the challenges faced by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) due to opposition from the BJP and urged the people of Delhi to re-elect Kejriwal. “The people of Delhi, Aam Aadmi Party MLAs, and I, who will remain the Delhi CM till the next elections, will work with one resolution that we need to make Arvind Kejriwal the Chief Minister of Delhi again,” Atishi added.

Delhi Minister Gopal Rai reiterated the party’s demand for early elections and stated that Atishi would carry out the responsibilities of the Chief Minister until Kejriwal is re-elected. “When he (Arvind Kejriwal) decided to resign, a legislative party meeting was held today. In the meeting, it was unanimously decided that until the next elections, which we want to be held in October-November at the earliest, and people make Arvind Kejriwal the Delhi CM with a thumping majority, Atishi would carry out the responsibilities as the new CM,” Rai said.

Delhi government minister Kailash Gehlot, who was also considered a potential candidate for the CM position, supported Atishi’s appointment, stating, “Everyone unanimously agreed on Atishi’s name.”

Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation after being released from Tihar jail on bail in a corruption case related to the alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam. He called for early elections to prove his honesty, stating that re-election would serve as a “certificate” of his integrity. The Supreme Court imposed conditions on his release, including refraining from public comments about the case and attending all trial court hearings unless exempted.
