New Delhi [India], September 21: President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi as the Chief Minister of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. This appointment will be effective from the date she is sworn in.

The President also accepted the resignation of AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal as the Chief Minister. However, Kejriwal will continue to hold office until Atishi is officially sworn in. The swearing-in ceremony will take place today at Raj Niwas.

According to an official statement, “The President is pleased to accept the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister, National Capital Territory of Delhi, along with his Council of Ministers, with immediate effect. He will, however, continue to act as the Chief Minister, National Capital Territory of Delhi, till the new Chief Minister is sworn in.”

The statement further added, “The President is pleased to appoint Atishi as the Chief Minister, National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from the date she is sworn in.”

Additionally, the President has approved the appointment of five ministers, including Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, Imran Hussain, and Mukesh Ahlawat. These appointments will also be effective from the date they are sworn in.

Earlier, the Aam Aadmi Party announced that Atishi would take the oath as the new Chief Minister of Delhi on September 21, along with other ministers. Atishi expressed mixed feelings about the change in leadership, thanking outgoing CM Arvind Kejriwal for his trust and expressing her commitment to working hard to bring him back as Chief Minister after the upcoming assembly elections.

Atishi, who is 43 years old, will become the third woman Chief Minister of Delhi, following Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. A prominent leader of AAP, Atishi has significantly contributed to improving education in Delhi’s government-run schools. She currently represents the Kalkaji constituency in the Delhi Assembly and holds the most portfolios in the Delhi government. She joined the Delhi cabinet in March 2023 and is now set to lead AAP as it prepares for the upcoming assembly polls.
