Assam Tea Sales Soar to Over Rs 2,800 Crore at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre

Assam Tea Sales Reach New Heights at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre

The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) in Assam, India, has reported a remarkable increase in tea sales for the financial year 2024-25, with over Rs 2,800 crore worth of tea sold by October. This is a significant rise from the previous year’s sales of Rs 2,059 crore during the same period.

Record-Breaking Sales

According to GTAC’s official data, approximately 111.03 million kg of tea was sold at an average price of Rs 252 per kg. In contrast, during the 2023-24 financial year, 102.92 million kg of tea was sold at an average price of Rs 200.08 per kg.

Factors Contributing to the Increase

Dinesh Bihani, Secretary of the Guwahati Tea Auction Buyer’s Association (GTABA), explained that the price per kg increased by Rs 52.75 compared to the previous year. He attributed this to climate change, which caused a production shortfall of 63 million kg from April to September, leading to higher prices, especially for quality tea. Government initiatives to develop tea garden areas also played a role.

Export Growth and Digital Advancements

This year, 31 million kg of tea have been exported, with increased demand from Russia, Iran, and European countries. Additionally, most tea gardens in Assam have adopted digital payment methods for labor wages, and the GTAC has fully digitalized its operations.

Recently, the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre celebrated 200 years of Assam tea, marking a significant milestone in the region’s tea industry.
