Amid heavy rains inundating large areas of Tripura, Assam Rifles has launched relief and rescue operations in East Kanchanbari of Kumarghat district and Karbook and Amarpur of Gomati district.

Two columns for flood relief were immediately launched by Assam Rifles on August 20, following a requisition from the civil administration due to landslides and rising water levels. Hundreds of homes were washed away as flash floods surged after 72 hours of incessant rains. The Haora, Karki, Dhalai, Manu, Muhuri, and Gomti rivers swelled dangerously, flowing above the danger mark.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said that the administration is prioritizing rescue and relief operations and that he is monitoring the situation amid heavy rainfall across various districts. He mentioned, “I have information that there is a depression in the Bay of Bengal causing this rain, impacting almost every district. I was monitoring from Delhi.”

CM Saha reported 321 relief camps operating in the state, housing around 30,000 people. He stated, “We are ensuring the food, health, and hygiene of the people stranded in the camps. One NDRF team from Assam has already arrived, and four teams from Arunachal Pradesh are to arrive soon.”

He also spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who assured all possible support during this crisis. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall to continue over Tripura for the next two days.
