Assam Police Begins 2024 BMI Check in Guwahati

The Assam Police has started the Body Mass Index (BMI) assessment for 2024 in Guwahati. In 2023, 1.6% of police personnel were found to be obese, which means their BMI was 30 or higher.

Assam Director General of Police GP Singh shared on social media that the process will be faster this year because only weight needs to be recorded. Heights were already recorded last year. He also mentioned that his own BMI has slightly decreased from 25.12 in 2023 to 25.02 this year.

Last year, the BMI recording took place at 35 locations across the state for all serving police personnel. This initiative was directed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The Assam Police Headquarters decided to professionally record the BMI of all police personnel, including IPS/APS officers and all DEF/Bn/Organizations.

GP Singh also stated that those in the obese category will have three months to reduce their weight. If they fail to do so, they will be sent for voluntary retirement, except for those with genuine medical conditions like thyroid issues.
